Sempermom

The friendship of mothers is best realize as we pray for each other in the vocation we share. We are daughters of the New Eve. It is Mary who waits for us, journeys with us, cries with us, laughs with us, teaches us, and prays with us. As we retire in the evenings, may we find joy in knowing that, we may be someone's mother by day, but by night, we sleep in peace as her daughters, first.

Prayers of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla

'A Saint in Action'
PRAYERS from Saint Gianna
Most of the quotations are taken from the booklet “Gianna Beretta Molla: Journey of Holiness”, prepared under the direction of the organizational committee for the beatification of gianna beretta molla, trans. Sr. L. DeStefano (Milan: ITTI, 1994).

“My most good Jesus, God of infinite mercy, most sweet Father of our souls and especially of the most weak, of the most miserable, of the most sick, of those souls that you carry with a special tenderness in Your divine arms, I come to ask You, thanks to the love and to the merits of Your sacred heart, for the grace to understand and to always do your holy will, the grace to trust in You, and the grace to rest securely in time and eternity in Your divine arms filled with love.”

“I make note of doing all for Jesus.  I offer Him all my work, all my disappointments and sufferings.  I make note that in order to serve God, I no longer wish to go to the cinema unless I know beforehand that it is worth seeing-that it is modest, moral, and not scandalous.  I wish to die rather than commit mortal sin.  I wish to fear mortal sin as if it were a serpent and I repeat I would die a thousand times rather than offend the Lord. I wish to ask the lord for help not to go to hell and therefore to avoid all that would harm my soul.  I will say on ‘Ave‘ daily so that lord will grant me a holy death.  I beg the Lord to help me understand His great mercy.  I propose to obey mother Malatto and to study even though I don’t feel like it, for the love of Jesus.  from this day on, I wish to pray on my knees in the morning in Church just as I do in my room in the evening at the foot of my bed.”

“Lord, keep your grace in my heart.  Live in me so that Your grace may be mine.  Make it that I may bear every day some flowers and new fruit.”

“Lord, may this light you have lit in my soul never be extinguished.”

ON PRAYER

“Prayer…’the soul of every apostolate’, interior life, life of union with God.  Constant, intense prayer to obtain grace from God.  personal and communal prayer; meditation, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the rosary, frequent confession, daily communion, spiritual exercises…”

“even if you go to work, don’t ever neglect your meditation and if possible, make a visit to the blessed sacrament, receiving communion at least once a week, if not daily…only if we are rich in grace ourselves, can we spread it around us, for we cannot give what we do not have.”

“why do you not succeed in doing good?  It’s because you do not pray enough.”

SURRENDER

“Whatever God wants.”

“God’s providence is in all things.  it’s always present.”

DUTY

“when one does one’s own duty, one must not be concerned, because God’s help will not be lacking.”

“One earns paradise with one’s daily task.”

“the secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for all that He, in His goodness, sends to us day after day.”

“as to the past, let us entrust it to God’s mercy, the future to divine providence.  our task is to live holy the present moment.”

PURITY

“our body is a cenacle, a monstrance; through its crystal the world should see God.”

“Purity must control the proper use of the pleasures of the senses.  our body is sacred.  it is in conjunction with the soul in doing good.  purity is a resultant virtue, that is, a unity of other virtues that bring it into custody.  How does one keep custody of purity?  By surrounding our body with the hedge of sacrifice, purity becomes beauty.  purity becomes freedom.”

SUFFERING AND SACRIFICE

“Also in suffering, let us say: thanks be to God.”

“One cannot love without suffering or suffer without loving.”

“Look at the mothers who truly love their children; how many sacrifices they make for them.  They are ready for everything, even to give their own blood so that their babies grow up good, healthy, and strong.”

“Yes, I have prayed so much in these days.  With faith and hope I have entrusted myself to the Lord…I trust in God, yes; but now it is up to me to fulfill my duty as a mother.  I renew to the Lord the offer of my life.  I am ready for everything, to save my baby.”

“Sacrifice; the final end of prayer and action is not to receive praise or self advantage but to busy oneself, as did Jesus, in the total giving of oneself for others at the cause of renunciation and suffering, in the impassionate competition of love which arrives at the sacrificing of one’s own life.”

“To work, to sacrifice oneself solely for the glory of God.  To sow our small seed tirelessly…and if after having worked in the best way possible, we do not succeed, we must generously accept this.  a failure well-accepted by an apostle who has used all means to succeed, is more meritorious than a triumph.”

ACTION

“Do not be afraid to defend God, the church, the pope and priests.  it is just the moment for action.  Against this anti-religious and immoral campaign one cannot be indifferent.”

“We must act, we must enter into all the fields of social, familiar and political action.  and to work, because all the dark and threatening forces of evil are united.  It is necessary that the forces of good be all united and form a kind of dam, a barrier as if to say:
‘there is no passing over here.”

“it is not enough to speak well, we must show by examples.”

“We must be living witnesses of the beauty and grandeur of christianity.  to make truth visible in one’s own person, to render truth pleasing, offering oneself as a significant and, if possible, heroic example.”

“Action, Apostolate: complete dedication to others, especially for the salvation of those fallen away from the church.  all must be done for the kingdom of God because Jesus must reign.”

“Let us always work generously with humility, not wanting to see immediate results in our work.  that which counts is to work and not to give up.  saving the world has never been an easy task, either for the Son of God of for the apostles.  I have told you that Catholic Action is a sacrifice.”

VOCATION

to know your vocation: “(1) Ask God in prayer; (2) ask one’s spiritual director; (3) ask oneself, knowing one’s own inclinations.”

“Everything has a particular end and obeys a law.  Everything develops toward a predestined end.  God has traced a way for each one of us…both our earthly and eternal happiness depends on following our vocation very carefully.”

“Every vocation is a call to motherhood or fatherhood, earthly, spiritual, and moral.  God has placed in us an instinct for life. A priest is a father, nuns are mothers, mothers of souls.”

“Woe to those young people who do not accept the vocation of motherhood.”

“Each of us must prepare ourselves for our own vocation and prepare ourselves to be givers of life.”

“All the Lords’s ways are beautiful because their end is one and the same: to save our own soul and to succeed in leading many other souls to heaven, to give glory to god.”

“If during the struggles to carry out our vocation, we should have to die, that would be the most beautiful day of our life.”

LOVE

“to love means the desire to perfect oneself and the loved one, to overcome selfishness and to give oneself.”

“Love must be total, full, complete, governed by god’s law and it must carry over into eternity.”

During the month of May, our parish invited children to enter a Marian Contest that involved the following theme:

"Devotion to Mary Leads to the Imitation of Christ"

John Dom decided to bake the two-hearts chocolate chip cookie cake with white and dark chocolate almond icing, along with 'no-chocolate-chip cookies.

The motto reads around his cake reads:

"Jesus without Mary is like Chocolate Chip Cookies without Chocolate Chips.
He won first prize for the baking entries.

Marianna entered this picture using pastels and pencil.
She won third place.

What a marvelous inspiration for those who are teaching children
to invite them to show their love of our Blessed Mother
by sponsoring a contest for them to show their artistic talents.
Below is  the display of all the pictures entered
and some of our favorites done by the children.

 I love her, Mommy!

What does love sound like when love sings?

If it is true, as Saint Augustine believed,
that "singing belongs to one who loves,"
than the love song awaits the voice
when love is finally known.

Once love is known, the song takes flight, holding the voice captive.
The moment love is understood, the song is sure to follow.

Remember with me what that moment must have been like

when Mary first understood
what the love of our Heavenly Father would mean,
for all of human kind,
through the message of the Angel Gabriel.

That first moment when Gabriel would speak her name,

"Hail, Mary, Full of Grace", she begins to understand
the love of her Father-God,
to choose so humble and hidden a gentle daughter of prayer,
as His means to answer the prayers of her people.
This Love turns words into Flesh.
This Love raises Life.
This Love saves the lost.
This Love raises voices into song.

This song of Gabriel is passed onto us,

each time we pray these first words to Mary.
Our voices join the choir of heavenly hosts and saints
from the beginning of time
through all eternity, with five simple words,
'Hail Mary, Full of Grace'.

 When we pray these words,

we reveal our trust in God's Love~through, with and in His daughter,
the Mother of the Word~Incarnate, our Mother.
We remember with her, that moment
when she trusted and received her Son and Savior,
as the humble handmaid of the Lord.

Mary's trust in her Savior inspires miracles and signs of wonder.

One moment in time, she shares her cares with Jesus,
when they were invited to attend a wedding feast together.
The wine had run out.
She implores the help of her Savior-Son,
knowing that they would not be left unaided.
She teaches us the answer to every prayer,
"Do whatever He tells you."

My little daughter's own expression of love captured in this picture has found a song in my heart.  Her childlike confidence teaches me to trust my prayers to the attentive care of Mary.  When we pray the Memorare each day, we are reminded that ‘never was it known’ that our cares would be ‘left unaided’ when entrusted to the Daughter of His trust.  We are inspired to offer this prayer, The Memorare, through the witness of the 17th century poor French priest, Fr. Claude Bernard, who depended on this prayer for his own miraculous healing and for the conversion of many hardened criminals.  He had over 200,000 leaflets made of the Memorare, which resulted in many reconciled to God before their deaths.
And so, we trust and pray.    From the greeting words of Archangel Gabriel,
To the last recorded words of our Blessed Mother Mary in Sacred Scripture
Through the love of our Saintly Siblings in the prayer of the Memorare,
                                              love has found this song.

We sing what we cherish to remember,
when love first became known.

There are those who’ve fled to your protection.
And so, I fly unto you.
There are those who’ve implored your assistance.
To you I fly, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

Remember, Most Gracious Virgin Mary, (His Daughter)
Remember, O Virgin of Virgins, (Our Mother)
Remember, O Mother of the Word, (Incarnate)
O, Mother of Mercy, hear and Answer Me...
Never was it known.  Never was it known.

There are those who’ve sought your intercession.
Never left unaided.
To you I cry, despise not my prayer,
Hear and answer me.

Remember, Most Gracious Virgin Mary, (His Daughter)

 The Wedding at  Cana
      (John 2)
On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was here; Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples.  When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, 'they have no wine.' And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me?  My hour has not yet come."  His mother said to the servants,
                                       "Do whatever he tells you."

The Newest Willoughby Baby Arrives on May 6th, 2015, Wednesday! Welcome Cashyl Ryan

Three miles from home, Heather was walking when her water broke.  I can not imagine walking three miles that way!  Ryan began his hour drive home to regroup and execute the labor and delivery plan that had been rehearsed and practiced throughout the time leading up to the big day of delivery.

On the day our little grand son arrived, tornadoes were touching down state-wide, causing a great deal of uncertainty, along with the unexpected unfolding of his birth.  With much prayer and coaching from Ryan and their doula, with the skills and expertise of their doctor, Baby Cashyl Ryan was born at 9pm, 8#, 13 oz, 21 1/2 inches long.  Shortly after he was born, he began to have labored breathing.  He had to spend some observation time in the NICU.  Ryan moved close to him, holding his little hand, placing his palm on his tiny head, to give him the comfort touch that makes all the difference to little newborns.

I had not heard of the name, Cashyl before Ryan passionately presented it to us.  It is Gaelic for 'castle' or 'fortress', which fits very nicely with the Willoughby charism.  We have compared baby pictures and see that when our Cashyl Ryan seems to be fretful and in distress, he looks like Ryan.  When calm and peaceful, he looks like Heather.

Their loving, kind and generous priest came to the hospital to bless Baby Cashyl and to give them Holy Communion, which blessed and strengthened them as they prepared to return to their happy home life.

We will get to see him when he is Baptized on May 31st.  My dear friend, Cece, texted me throughout the entire delivery, letting me know where the tornadoes were most menacing.  Even grand nana's need coaching when grand babies are being born!

Winter Wonderland to Psalm 17 February 25th, 2015
(video linked)
Winter, lenten greetings to you all.

Alabama has been blanketed in an unusual amount of snowfall since yesterday afternoon, when it first began to fall. Snow days do not happen often in Alabama! Late yesterday morning the snow began to fall, non-stop until very early in the morning today.  I went out while it was snowing yesterday to take my first set of pictures.  It was a magical wonderland out there!  Before I went out this morning for more pictures, I discovered Psalm 17 in today's readings for Liturgy of the Hours.  I could not have found a more perfect narrative for the beauty of nature, blanketed by this rare Alabama snowfall in February.   While I was on my second walk today, in the middle of the forest, 4 stories high from the river, I received a call from my little 4 year-old godson in Argentina!  He recited the beautiful poem, "Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue", while I tromped through the blue-white snow.

Would you like to take a walk with me?  The snow, the psalms, time to offer thanks for the beauty around us...come for a walk with me and share in this time of prayer.
Dress warm, with hat, gloves and boots!  Marianna was so chilled when we were done she asked if she could take a 'snoak'.
I guess that's a bubble bath after you've been soaked in the snow.

So, I dedicate my last picture in this slideshow to my little godson, Caleb.  Mary, he is so blessed to have you for his mama.  As I read this poem, I still hear him saying all these words!  Our Lady must be smiling on us all.   Thankfully, Sharon

Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue

Lovely Lady dressed in blue ----
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!

Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?

Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?

Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things-
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels' wings

Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me ---- for you know?

Lovely Lady dressed in blue ----
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
And you know the way.

2014 Our Year of Faith in Review

Spring
Summer
Fall
Winter
Over this past year, the four seasons were so vibrant and extraordinary on the Mulberry River where we live.  We share some of the beauty we have encountered with you all, as we offer thanks for the faithfulness of God, revealed through His creation uniquely made manifest with each passing season.

We have been richly blessed by the family faith life over this past year.
Whether we gathered for the May Crowning, the Corpus Christi procession,
park days, children celebrations or First Saturday Holy Hour, the gift of faith was ours to receive and share through God’s loving providence.  I put a movie together of the beautiful faith life we share.  If you click on the link you can see the beauty of this place at dawn and dusk, especially during Advent and Christmas.

Over this past year, the Sacramental life defined our family reunions, as we gathered to celebrate the baptism of our fourth grand baby, Liam Xavier;
and the holy matrimony of our second son and his beautiful bride, Heather Ann. We lived in Oklahoma for eight years before moving away seven years ago. When we moved, our oldest two sons remained to finish their college degrees.  Ryan met beautiful Heather in college there, and remains in Oklahoma to this day.

Returning to Oklahoma, where our two youngest children were born, brought back fond memories and these very special mother friends in my life. What brought us all together in the beginning years, back in 1999, was our motherhood and our shared faith life.  We shared home schooling, many family gatherings, and the sacramental life together. Some of us shared pregnancies and the glorious days when our children were born. I am so honored to stand with these mother-friends, who have witnessed to me the beauty of motherhood and the faithfulness of being daughters of our Loving Father. The seven of us have thirty-eight children on this side of life and nine +  grandchildren.I am so thankful to you all for coming to Ryan's wedding and spending the evening with our family, once again. It was a gift to share two Holy Masses, at the wedding and then at Saint Monica's on Sunday. You are sempermoms and I am grateful for the prayer life we have shared over the years and for all the years to come.

 For the gift of faith that we first received from our parents;
daily through the hands of our holy priests;
and perpetually through the prayers of our holy nuns,
we offer thanksgiving through our family Rosary and the holy Mass.
Faith, hope and charity to all in the New Year.

The "O Antiphons" of Advent

The "O Antiphons" Of Advent

The Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

December 17

O Wisdom of our God Most High,
guiding creation with power and love:
come to teach us the path of knowledge!

December 18

O Leader of the House of Israel,
giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai:
come to rescue us with your mighty power!

December 19

O Root of Jesse’s stem,
sign of God’s love for all his people:
come to save us without delay!

December 20

O Key of David,
opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom:
come and free the prisoners of darkness!

December 21

O Radiant Dawn,
splendor of eternal light, sun of justice:
come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the
shadow of death.

December 22

O King of all nations and keystone of the Church:
come and save man, whom you formed from the dust!

December 23

O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law:
come to save us, Lord our God!

Saint Nicholas~Apostolic Succession~Eucharistic Devotion

The Christmas Story

Saint Nicholas~Apostolic Succession~Eucharistic Adoration
December 6th, 2014

Who is this man taking his place in the manger scene, gazing with tender adoration upon the Baby Jesus?  His entire posture seems to express that Jesus, the Son...is also God, in the Mystery Holy Trinity.  Belief in the Holy Trinity explains why any soul would kneel before the humble Infant Savior, born in a lowly Bethlehem manger.

Saint Nicholas suffered through persecution, imprisonment and heresy as he made his way to this peaceable pose of faith.  Although fiercely free and faithful in his belief in the Holy Trinity, he suffered bodily imprisonment as Bishop of Myra under the Diabolical Diocletian (A.D.284-305).  Once liberated under ‘Constantine the Great’, he, along with the Bishops of his day, would be compelled to meet to refute a false teaching from Arius who taught that Jesus, the Son, was not God, the Father.

Every Sunday, we are reminded of the consensus of truth preserved by the Holy Spirit through the Bishops at the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.).  During every Sunday liturgy, we stand to profess the twelve articles of our faith contained in the Nicene Creed~seven articles concerning God the Son.

God the Son promised to remain with us always until the end of the age~to adore, receive and serve in His Eucharistic presence, made possible by the Apostolic Succession, through the ministerial priesthood.

As Bishop Saint Nicholas is whimsically portrayed as holding God in his hands over three hundred years after the birth of this Infant Savior, we are reminded of the many times he held God the Son in his hands with each Mass he offered for the flock he shepherded until his death on December 6th, A.D.343

We are closest to Saint Nicholas on Christmas Eve where Jesus remains ~ where he has earned the honor to to be jolly...and to sing through all eternity,
“Ho, Ho, Holy is His Name

"Our profession of faith begins with God, for God is the First and the Last, the beginning and the end of everything. The Credo begins with God the Father, for the Father is the first divine person of the Most Holy Trinity; our Creed begins with the creation of heaven and earth, for creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God's works."
---the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 198

Catholic belief is succinctly expressed in the profession of faith or credo called the Nicene Creed:

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
